Dmitrij Gornowskij was born in Almaty (Kazakhstan) into a family of musicians. He began taking cello lessons at the age of 6, his first teacher being his father, Anatoly Gornowskij. He then took lessons from Prof. Nurlan Dolbaev and attended master classes with Professors Igor Gavrysh, Valentin Feigin and Maria Tchaikovsky at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1990 he won first prize at the National Music Competition in Pavlodar (Kazakhstan), and in 1991 he won second prize at the International Competition of the Central Asian Republics and Kazakhstan. In 1995 he took part in the International Khalmamedov Competition in Turkmenistan.
This was followed by several chamber and solo concerts, guest appearances with the orchestra "Nota Bene" and later with the "Academy of Soloists". Performances have taken him to Russia, America and Europe, among others. Dmitrij has lived in Germany since 1997. He has performed as a soloist at international festivals, including the "Haydn Festival" in Korea, the "Bitola Music Festival" in Macedonia and the "Audi Classic Open Air" in Germany.
In 2004 he founded the Almati Duo. This line-up has produced several CDs. He has also recorded three CDs as a solo cellist with the Cologne Chamber Philharmonic. Since 2010 he has been a member of the “Gershwin Quartet”, which performs with the world-famous clarinetist Giora Feidman.
As a solo cellist, Gornowskij has performed with many international orchestras, including the Dortmund Philharmonic, the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, the Symphony Orchestra of India and the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked with artists such as Nigel Kennedy, Dmitri Berlinsky, Sergei Nakajakow and Yuri Bashmet.
